Our Story

Say Hello to The Hill, one of Dublin’s most iconic local pubs.

Our beautiful building originally opened for business way back in 1845 and has remained a longstanding part of the Ranelagh and Dublin 6 community. Over the past 200 years a number of proprietors have all put their stamp on this timeless bar, even operating as a greengrocer for a time. In this tradition, a number of sympathetic renovations have taken place over the past few months; breathing new life into the beautiful and historic building inside and out. A lot of the bar’s original character has been retained and you will find nuggets of history dotted all around with memories of its previous lives etched into its design, such as original gold mirrored plating above the bar displaying the name Thomas Kennedy, a previous owner. Out front, we’ve uncovered some of the building’s original brass and wood fittings, which has allowed the original design to flourish.

We’re looking forward to welcoming locals and surrounding neighbours back into The Hill. ‘The Local’ has traditionally been the focal point of any Irish community and we want to preserve this tradition in a way that fits our contemporary lifestyles. A place to grab a coffee during the day, enjoy a post work pint or cocktail and still be able to catch up on all of the local goings on. Our aim is to provide you with top quality service alongside innovative food and drink in a welcoming atmosphere.

To compliment this bold new direction, our drinks selection has been elevated with a distinct cocktail menu full of subtle homages to Ranelagh's history. We’ve taken seven classic drinks and reimagined them to allow you to experience a flavour profile that suits your taste. With memories of The Hill’s past all around us, the importance of legacy has not been lost on us and we have built our cocktail menu with this in mind. Our aim is to be as sustainable as possible throughout the process without compromising the quality of our drinks. To do this we are reusing fruit peels and wedges to create cordials, using coffee beans to create our in house coffee syrup and banning the use of straws. We aim to develop a new menu quarterly as well as looking for new ways to be as sustainable as possible during the creative process so that the end product is always green.

There’s no need to book a spot when joining us at The Hill, just drop in, choose your spot and we’ll look after you.
